Writing History & Chaos! (September 9th - September 15th)

What is up, my friends!

This week’s feature is around the WagMedia Writer’s Rooms.

Launched with the intent to help foster writers and produce high-quality work through collective intelligence, @pnin, a professionally published writer, offered to direct the effort.

Aside from conveying information accurately and efficiently, skilled writing conveys intelligence, authority, and reliability to readers. When public-facing accounts release information with typos, grammatical errors, and otherwise confusing writing, it leads to embarrassment and an erosion of community trust.

Anyone who has requested the role of “Writer” can access three channels: The Research, Drafting, and Reference Rooms.

In the Research Room, Writers discuss content they are thinking of covering. Here, they brainstorm and ask for help, even collaborating if several writers are interested in the same topic.

In the Drafting Room, Writers submit their work as a public google document to request edits and critiques. Anyone with a Writer role can edit and comment on the document.

After 24-48 hours have passed, the Writing Room’s Director will review all work done, including the quality of the initial draft and the quality of the editors, applying his own edits as necessary.

Both the Writer who submitted work and the editors are rewarded KSM for their efforts.

Higher rates of KSM are rewarded to drafts of higher quality rather than lower quality to incentivize personal growth. Similarly, insightful comments, quality, and thorough edits are rewarded at greater rates.

Finally, for works that Writers are particularly proud of, they can post their work in the Reference Room for other Writers to reference in the future.

As with all art forms, the skill and technique of the artist lead to better engagement and impact. WagMedia hopes that, in time, the quality of work produced through the Writing Rooms will be an inspiration and a point of pride for the Dotsama ecosystem.

Simply request the Writer role from any WagMedia Director if you are interested in participating.

TOP NEWS OF THE WEEK

From the writing room to writing history, the top news story this past week in all blockchain is the Ethereum merge. It has been a long wait, but it is something long-awaited in our industry and fits the interoperable multichain ethos of DotSama.

Check out Polkadot co-Founder Rob Habermeier's CoinDesk interview on Ethereum's outlook following the merge. He responds to the interviewer by establishing that Polkadot is an ETH collaborator and not an ETH killer. Moreover, Polkadot is about interoperability and collaboration with other chains as well, including Ethereum, Cosmos, Solana, and Avalanche.

As we all know, Polkadot and Kusama’s other co-founder Dr. Gavin Wood was a founding member and the CTO of Ethereum. He was responsible for coding its first working version, authored its Yellow Paper, as well as invented its Solidity programming language. You will find that there are a number of other prominent DotSama members with a long history working with Ethereum, and all share an interoperable multichain vision.

In terms of the merge impacting DotSama, this can mainly be seen with bridging. Parachain teams such as CLV, and Genshiro, as well as prominent bridges Celer and Multichain for Astar and Moonbeam/Moonriver respectively, put out suspension notices.

Not all teams with ties to Ethereum were impacted. Phala confirmed no impact, Efinity that it wouldn’t affect services, whilst OriginTrail had already decided to use teleporting instead of bridges.

On the other hand, some parachain teams had a bit more work. Darwinia is working on a major update post-merge centered around their LCMP approach, which is expected to come out of two weeks of development and testing soon.

Bifrost, who offers a vETH derivative staking product, put out a comprehensive article covering their roadmap and their required updates. Note that vETH is not redeemable until further Ethereum POS upgrades happen though it can be traded on the open market as always.

Whilst the merge has been successful with no incidents reported thus far, it may make you think of the benefits of forkless upgrades. This and other sound points were raised in some threads about Polkadot and Ethereum by some of our WagMedia content creators.

This includes @Csaint’s response to Bankless, @pitcoin’s Polkadot and Ethereum 2.0 comparison, and @pnp’s thoughts on Ethereum and Polkadot.

To wrap up, here are a couple of fun commentaries on merge day from parachain teams: fusing Polkadot and Ethereum results in Moonbeam, and how about earning high APY from DOT on Parallel after realizing that not much changed.

Now, on to the usual flurry of news & content!

The Unstoppable Code of GitArch!

Nitty Gritty

  • As the Ethereum Merge comes into effect Darwinia will be doing a major update of its light-client cross-chain messaging protocol(LCMP), which is responsible for bridging EVM chains and Substrate-chains.
  • Astar introduces its Portal V2, which includes a new UI, recent transaction history, and a manual input function.
  • Bi-directional HRMP channels are now open between Parallel & Phala and Heiko & Khala simultaneously. The move will provide another outlet for swapping Phala tokens, as well as introduce another token into the Parallel ecosystem to use in their DeFi Super App.
  • A useful feature to add your on-chain identity is now on GM Parachain app. Users can add their discord usernames and receive notifications when they receive a GM or GN.
  • Parallel Finance’s bounty program will be concluding on September 16th. The winners will be the top 10 most popular videos or articles as voted by the community.
  • Check out the EXO x Public Pressure twitch stream here.
  • Here’s an introduction to GitArch, an unstoppable alternative to GitHub. It is built using InvArch's INV4 protocol. More information on it here, and here’s a demo of its dashboard.
  • Astar details their new XVM pallet. XVM allows developers to build with both Solidity and ink! Together. Bi-directional XVM is expected to launch on Shiden by Q2 of 2023.
  • Peaq provides details about joining the move.id initiative in their official news blog.
  • $CRU is now tradable on Ofero Exchange on Elrond. You will need to bridge CRU to Elrond via the Crust App.
  • Parallel Heiko XCM integration with Crab is now live. A potential use case that could be in the works is a cross-chain NFT marketplace, which allows bidders on one chain to bid on an auction on another chain.
  • Algem (a liquid staking dApp on Astar) is holding a contest to reward the 999th, 1000th and 1001st users. Check it out to see how you can participate.
  • Invarch announces a partnership with Subquery, which will provide data indexing on Invarch and Tinkernet networks.

  • Check out the launch of the Crust Files landing page.
  • Kylin Network drops a thread to help you better understand some of the abbreviations associated with its ecosystem.
  • Calamari has a tokens update. The 10% reserved for crowdloan rewards of Kusama parachain renewal is no longer required as the team self-bid, so this can now be repurposed for staking and development fund. This introduces a staking model that previously did not exist where holders can participate in delegated proof of stake nomination for rewards. Token burns and other measures will be in place to maintain a deflationary token.
  • Nodle has introduced some new features for its app. They have simplified how to set up; introduced the ability to send and receive NFTs (with minting ability coming soon); and provided QR functionality to make things convenient.
  • Check out Rob Habermeier's CoinDesk interview on Ethereum's outlook following today's merge. "Eth Collaborator" not killer people! Interoperability & collaboration with other chains including Ethereum, Cosmos, Solana, and Avalanche.
