Wild Auctions & Building Crazy Stuff! (July 1st - July 7th)

What is up my friends! Last week, Polkadot Decoded was a huge success. With so many great minds gathered, content continues to surface.

If you have not watched it by now, do check out the space monkeys podcast with Dr. Gavin Wood. There was so much covered, but not enough time; it seems there is going to be a part 2 in the future.

The interview was a real treat to watch, covering a broad range of topics. We get to know a bit more about Dr. Gavin Wood as a remarkable pioneer, and we catch a glimpse of what is on his mind. In particular, the topic of parachain auctions and the chaos narrative of Kusama left a lasting impression.

An interesting point made about parachain auctions was the need to adapt, potentially finding alternative mechanisms such as fixed price slots, longer-term slots, or even first refusals.

Regarding the expected chaos from Kusama, Dr. Gavin expressed that there hasn’t been enough experimentation. He didn’t expect 100% uptime, and in the building of “crazy stuff”, some of it will not work, but some of it will be amazing.

TOP NEWS OF THE WEEK

Those points from the interview nicely lead into the top story of the week, where the ongoing parachain auctions gave a feeling of chaos.

Amplitude won the Kusama parachain slot not long after Decoded wrapped up. It stormed into a commanding lead despite joining the auction two days later than other participants. The canary chain for Pendulum had some juicy bonus incentives and favorable tokenomics without allocations for either the team or VCs. For more information on Pendulum and its use case, then it is worth watching a recent Kusamarian video about them.

Whilst the Kusama auction could be considered impressive under the market conditions, Polkadot auctions have raised brows. After the lack of team declarations and formal bidders, an unnamed parathread ID led the auction with a single DOT bid.

The shock and surprise was short-lived, as more unnamed parathread IDs took turns with low bids. Eventually, Bitgreen and Darwinia emerged from their self-funded bids.

Darwinia won with only 9.9K DOT and 41.65% leading blocks. Whilst some have murmured, it’s important to remember that winning means little if the parachain does not launch.

Darwainia already has a developed ecosystem along with a live Kusama parachain. Maintaining a low overhead allows it to have more resources in the future.

Wild Parachain Auctions!

Now on to the usual flurry of news and content!
