RMRK Artist Spotlight #16: Marlua and Her Emotions

On this episode of RAS, we caught up with Marlua, a visual artist from Zagreb. The first thing one notices about Marlua's art is the delicate balance of chaos and beauty. Most of her pieces spot faces with intruiging emotions (and bad dentition for the most part). Given her love for expressionism and abstract art, it is no surprise that her art turns out the way it does.

She is one of the few artists on Singular to have sold a sizeable number of NFTs from her collection - Marlua's Emotions. Her work goes to show that NFT art can be anything the artist decides to make. Read the interview to learn how she started, her favorite artists, her process, and more.

RMRK: How did you start your art career?

I have always been into art and I studied in the Art gymnasium in Zagreb, Croatia. Until now, I didn't have the courage to start an art career but NFTs gave me that opportunity.

How did you get into NFTs?

That is actually a funny story. I have a lot of friends collecting NFTs and one of my first purchases was an Etherean on OpenSea. Then I heard about Bruno’s project from a mutual friend and I told myself this is your chance to give it a shot.

What is your favorite project that you’ve worked on?

It is really hard to name one particular project but if I really have to do it, it would be Tako’s Shiba Tales. We had a lot of fun making our collaboration, and it was kinda tricky combining our techniques and visions.

NFTs have provided accessibility and exposure to various forms of digital creations. Do you have new artists that you follow and what do you find interesting about them?

I am not sure how many of them are new, but artists I genuinely love would be Skullz, Diana, Taco, and Brubakerz. Where do I start?

Diana and the Kitty story is unbelievable. She’s an amazing pixel artist and has made it really hard to catch up. Brubakerz! I can only say that I tried to make a kusteroid and found that what Burbakerz does is really really hard to do. For Skullz, when I saw King of Skulls, it overwhelmed me. I don't know much about 3D art but I love it. And Taco. This guy inspires me with his art and his marketing skills. He always comes up with something new.

What is your creative process like?

It always starts with brainstorming. I want to have a full idea of what I am working on but 99% of the time it doesn't work that way and I get something much different from my first thought. Creativity is always around us and it depends how you interpret it and how you put it on a paper. I want my work to give collectors some emotions and feelings. I am always trying to do my best so that people can relate with my art because every painting shares a different story and emotions of that day.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I like expressionism, neo-expressionism, and abstract art in general. I'm really trying to go in that way and I hope you guys see it. I catch inspiration spontaneously and I will share with you one of my stories. I minted Namelok and I had Kratistos (my kind follower) DMing me where I am from. We started talking and we ended up on African tribes and fun facts about it. I really loved it and there comes inspiration for Abeo.

What are your goals in the NFT space?

I really don’t think that much about it. I just want to be recognized and give back to the community.

How do you feel the future of NFTs will look like?

It is too soon to tell but I think in 10 years from now we'll all have NFTs on our walls.

What would you most like an NFT platform to have?

Auctions 24-72 hours.

Have you thought of any interesting ways to use RMRK2.0 in your future collections? To get context, you can check out this post.

Not at the moment . But there are few functionalities with slight chance of usage on Marlua’s emotions.

Her candid reply as to the future of NFTs was a pleasure to read. It is natural for people to make predictions about things they aren't sure of. But the truth is that we don't really know where this is going. The one thing we do know is that it is going somewhere, and we are dedicated to seeing where it leads. More than that, we are willing to join in building the NFT future with our present actions.

We certainly loved talking to Marla and look forward to what she has to offer in future. You can follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Singular.
