DotSama at Davos (May 22nd - May 28th)

What is up my friends! What a week for live public engagement, as many within the Dotsama ecosystem got out there and opened up about the Web3 movement.

TOP NEWS OF THE WEEK

The topic at the top of most of the community member’s minds this week, would likely be Dr. Gavin Wood and a selection of Dotsama teams presenting at the World Economic Forum 2022 in Davos.

In particular “The Big Technology Podcast” interview with Gavin really stood out, check out Pnin’s excellent summary article on it, where there is even an embedded link to the recording.

The interview had some sound insightful views on Social Contracts and how existing Social Networking is handling our data. Gavin explains that Web3 is a proposition of a technology stack that can solve this. As it allows us to have consolidated data (without individuals that can just look at it), and in turn, run algorithms on it if everyone collectively agrees. Additionally, there would be options to opt-out your data before the algorithm is run, and also transparency if you are being paid to include your data.

The topic of Social graphs was also covered in the “What Will it Take to Build a Better Web?” session with Gavin and Frank McCourt (Entrepreneur and former owner of the LA Dodgers), where they get into Project Liberty. This project provides an open-source public infrastructure solution, which they label as Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DNSP).

There were many fantastic sessions held by the teams, here is just a list of a few of them:

  • “One Size Doesn’t Fit All: Why Multichain Is the Future of Blockchain” featuring Moonbeam (Derek Yoo), Kilt (Ingo Rübe), and Efinity (Oscar Franklin Tan).
  • “Fighting the Climate Crisis: How Web3 Is Solving Some of the World’s Biggest Challenges” featuring Energy Web (Jesse Morris).
  • “Limitless Future-Proofing: How Any Blockchain Use Case Can Be Built With Polkadot” featuring OriginTrail (Žiga Drev), Robonomics (Sergei Lonshakov), and Bit.Country (Chris Carmona).

As per the tweet by Peter Mauric, Polkadot owned it at Davos!

Whilst not everyone could have attended the live engagements at Davos, there was the opening of the Kusamaverse that was more accessible. Whilst there you can float around and explore the different spaces, hi-five some of your fellow community members, or even grab a table and have a chat.

Just like Davos there are also a number of live sessions being held by various teams within the ecosystem. The experience is quite profound, for instance, you could have joined a live session with Councilor Raul and asked him questions on the spot about governance. Such as, can governance work without a council? Or, how to prevent whales from dominating the vote?

Do make sure to check it out, and do look for the calendar to see when various teams will host a session. More details about the Kusamaverse can be found in the recent Kusamarian video.

Speed Reading

Nitty Gritty

  • Darwinia Network has officially launched LCMP. The Light-Client Messaging Protocol is designed to support interoperability between Polkadot, Kusama, and external networks in the most secure way possible.
  • Other Darwinia news with HRMP channels open between Crab Parachain and Karura.
  • InvArch partners up with RMRK. Totally makes sense given RMRK’s evolutionary NFTs and the profound impact on IP. Additionally, they have deployed a permanent and unincentivized testnet called Brainstorm. Up until now, the team has implemented: IP token sub-assets, IP licensing on-chain permission, and on-chain permissions like a DAO. Here is a guide on how to operate Brainstorm testnet.
  • DOT/USDC pair now available on OKX. Might be useful with all the stable pools coming to the DeFI protocols within Dotsama.
  • Parallel announces NFT functionality – where users can now leverage against NFTs.
  • Oak Network and Imbue announce an exciting partnership - building an automated notifications solution into the Imbue platform.
  • In preparation for Polkadot NA Hackathon, there was a community call (crowdcast). Here are some notes:

1 - many new projects joined with bounties, in addition to the originally posted ones. Up to 560k+ USD prizes in total 2 - pathways were updated, and there's swag for the top 100 participants 3 - collaboration is encouraged if you are "solo-hacking" 4 - it's possible to participate with a project that was funded by the treasury but you'd have to participate with new features and only they would be evaluated for the hackathon.

  • Huge for adoption, as Social-Media Disruptor Project Liberty to Run on Polkadot. This media article provides the following statement from Gav: “Web 3.0 needs a universally accessible social graph to be successful, as the Web 2.0 social giants currently have absolute control over what users can say or do on their platforms”.
  • Gelato Ops is now live on Moonbeam Network. Gelato is a decentralized network of bots for automating smart contract executions. Users of Gelato include EVM compatible blockchain ecosystems such as MakerDAO, PancakeSwap, QuickSwap, and many more. • An interesting development as Klaytn collaborates with Parity with building a Substrate chain that links into both Polkadot and its existing mainnet. Klaytn is a well-established blockchain in South Korea (KR). Metaverse, gaming, and entertainment are its primary use-cases, however, they also support Defi applications. They have deep ties with Kakao (one of the largest internet companies in KR), and Bank of Korea. The decision to build on Substrate is seen as a future-proofing move. As the Modular building approach without hardforks will provide a great path to unlock future development potential, as well as interoperability, scalability, and expansion into alternative ecosystems. They will initially look to utilize the substrate implementation as a Canary network, to battle test new developments. Additionally, there will be opportunities to port over existing applications to and from both Klaytn and Polkadot.
  • Looks like WASM contracts coming soon to Shiden.
  • Energy Web released an update on ElectraFlex, the world's first decentralized flexibility platform for distributed system operator (DSO). This will start with both teams respective Kusama chains Picasso and Karura opening up XCM channels. It represents further adoption of Acala’s overcollateralized stablecoin aUSD, and provides the stable asset that is required to support Composable’s cross-chain DeFI- protocols. The integration is also an opportunity for DeFI developers from other ecosystems that use CosmWasm (such as Cosmos and Terra) to focus on an alternative stablecoin via Composable’s XCVM.
